April 25, 2014 //  by Krishna Srinivasan//  Leave a Comment

This example shows how to open a word document using Java. If you are working with tools where you have to open the document by clicking on it, you can use the java.awt.Desktop API to easily open the document by passing the file object. Note that this API will open any document passed into the File class will be opened in the default program used by that native operating system.

Lets look at this example to open a word document in Windows operating system

OpenDocExample.java

package javabeat.net.io;

import java.awt.Desktop;
import java.io.File;
import java.io.IOException;

/**
 * Open Word Document Example

 *
 */
public class OpenDocExample {

	public static void main(String[] args) {

		//Create file object
		File file = new File("D:\\SampleDoc.docx");
		try {
			//Open the file using Desktop class
			Desktop.getDesktop().open(file);
		}catch (IOException exception){
			exception.printStackTrace();
		}
	}

}
